Hurricaine Sock Party '07

1. Repeat after me "no hurricanes, no hurricanes, no hurricanes" . Okay we just had to get that one out of the way first. We needed to created a bit of "good weather karma"!
Well, it worked last year! No hurricanes! No hurricanes! No hurricanes!

2. If your pet wrote a paragraph about you to describe you to us what would they say?
Connie and Carlos think Mom's pretty cool, if only because under the knitting on her lap is the warmest spot in the house. Carlos wishes Mom would let him have a few of her spare balls of yarn to play with, as he loves the smell of wool and the nice squishy texture. Maybe if he's good she'll knit him a couple chew toys. Connie is totally indifferent, except she wishes Mom wouldn't make her wear her handknit sweaters in the winter because they are soooo uncool. All in all, she has a generous hand with the treats, and spoils them rotten, so it's worth putting up with the massive stash taking up good playing room.

3. What is your favorite hurricane supplies snack?
Hmm, I like gummy worms, beef jerky (the cheap flat stick kind), licorice, and pecans.

4. Do sock patterns normally fit you "as written" or do you usually modify them for size in any way?
I usually don't knit socks for myself, but when I do I usually have to add some length. I have a pretty big foot, apparently.

What are your foot measurements, not just shoe size? (Measure the length of your foot from heel to toe, then the ball of your foot.
I wear a size 10 shoe. The circumference of my foot is about 9 inches. The distance from heel to toe is about 9.5 inches.

5. What one city abroad would you visit and why if money was no object? (and terrorism was non-existant)
My current obsession is Toronto (all the knitters! and the yarn!) but a couple friends and I have a running joke about hopping on a cruise to Italy one day.

6. Do you wear socks all year round or just during the winter? Do you prefer them tall or short or regular height?
I'm usually a bare foot kind of gal, but since moving to a house with tile floors, I seem to be wearing socks more often. I like my socks about crew length. I dream of one day owning a pair of beautiful knit knee socks, but since my calves are ginormous, it's probably not gonna happen.

7. The last time the power was out during hurricane season (or bad weather of any kind) did you knit by lantern or were you lucky enough to knit to the hum of a generator? Or did you knit at all?
I use the same system I have for knitting in bed after lights out, either a totally simple stockinette sock that I barely have to think about, or the combination of an LED reading light and candles.

8. Make a wish for your favorite sock yarn that you've already used once. What would it be? Dont be shy about listing an exact colorway or two if you'd like.
So many to choose from! I like Trekking yarns, Lorna's Laces, Zen Yarn Garden, and Sunshine Yarns (the last two you can sometimes find on Etsy.com) My dream is a self striping yarn in Harry Potter book Ravenclaw colors.

9. What is it about sock knitting that keeps you wanting to knit more and more socks?
For me socks can be comfort knitting or a small, easily finished challenge. Sometimes, you just need a simple, quick project to keep your hands busy during a time when you need to think about other things, other times you need a challenging, make you think project to force you to concentrate about anything but your worries. Most of my knitting is therapy, so socks can keep up with my changing moods. Plus, my Mom and Grandma are diabetic, and fight over the next pair of socks on the needles because they don't bind when their legs are swelling.

10. Make a wish for a sock yarn that you are dying to try but haven't bought for yourself yet. (be specific, even colorway if you'd like)
I still want to try Socks that Rock, especially Pucks Mischief or Farmhouse. I also love any yarn from independent dyers out there, and I'm sure there are some out there that are fabulous that I've never even heard of! Feel free to introduce me to your favorites!

11. What size needles do you knit socks for YOURSELF with the most? Are they circular or bamboo needles? What brand?
I use anything from a 1 to a 3, it depends on the yarn. I love my Lantern Moons, but I'm developing and obsession with the KnitPicks double pointed needles. I've tried socks on two circulars, but kept forgetting to change needles, and Magic Loop makes my hands hurt.

12. If you could only take 3 yarn related books and one previously knitted project that you love with you when you evacuated what would they be?
Probably Big Girl Knits, Victorian Lace today, and my personal binder of notes and printed patterns (is that cheating?), plus the blue sweater I knit myself last year.

13. What knitting notion do you wish you had that you just keep putting off getting for yourself?
One of these days, I will make or buy a swift! I said the same thing last year, and I still haven't bought one. I'd also like a nice Kacha style row counter, since I keep losing the barrel style ones.

14. What is your favorite tv show?
I haven't had cable in a few years, so I'm woefully behind on the current shows! I love all the CSI shows, NCIS, Monk, and the now canceled JAG (sob). I'm a fan of Alton Brown, and I got interested in Grey's Anatomy while visiting my Mom.

15. Do you want a lacey sock or a "solid fabric" sock from your hurricane partner?
I'd love anything! Cables, laces, anything but enterlac (I just can't understand it).

16. It's midnight and the power has been off for two days, its hot, and you have a craving for something sweet! What would it be? (This is a FOOD related question! LOL)
Mmmmm, really sweet iced tea. The kind where people ask if I'd like a little tea with my sugar! I've never found anyone who makes it as well as the chicken joint in my home town, but I make a pretty passable one with Darjeeling, sugar syrup, and a little mint.

17. Tell us a story about any of your hurricane weather related experiences.
Cut and pasted from last year, since I didn't have any hurricane experience before then.

My first hurricane was last year (the aftermath of Katrina, then Ophelia). My husband had returned from Afganistan and we went home to Texas to finish packing for my first PCS. He had to return to the base in NC the week after Katrina. We were driving along I-20 with my 2 kids (2 and 4 years old), there were no motels, no gas, people were stranded on the side of the road or at rest areas. It was one of the scariest times of my life. After we arrived our things were delayed, so when Ophelia came through we were sleeping on air mattresses, no kitchen setup to speak of, and totally unprepared. Luckly by the time it got to us it wasn't much more than a puffed up thunderstorm.

18. What was the one thing you wish you had remembered to get last year for hurricane supplies that you swore you wouldn't forget this year?
Water, always with the water! Why can't I ever remember to buy bottled water?

19. What color sock would you like to recieve from your sock partner? (if you don't have a pref just say so otherwise give us a hint!)
I love anything from rainbow bright to moody and deep! I'm not a huge fan of yellow and orange, but lately I've been drawn to a skein of bright flaming oranges and yellows at the yarn shop, so that could be changing. Basically, anything goes with socks.

20. Well surprise, this one isn't a question at all.. it's a THANK YOU for filling out this questionnaire and posting it.

I'm so far behind I'll never die

I do still live. Hubby has been home for a couple months, and it's cut into my knitting time. Nick is doing well in kindergarden, and we're talking about putting Ben in pre-k. I have a swap I need to post a thingy for, and knit a sock. My grandpa died last Monday, I still haven't had time to process that. I just need to sleep today, I'll come back tomorrow and post.
